You can start driving lessons at 16. The first steps are to make contact, enroll in Driving School 1, and begin practical driving lessons. The instruction builds up step by step, from the first lessons until the student is ready for the practical exam.

How to get started
THE PROCESS
From the first driving lesson to a full license — 15 steps according to the Transport Authority.
Step 1
Find a driving instructor
The first step in driving school is to choose a driving instructor. Ask about teaching methods, scheduling, study plan, learning materials, which driving schools are available, and the cost per lesson.
Step 2
Apply for a learner's permit
To begin driving school, you need to apply for a driver's license (learner's permit). The application is submitted electronically on Island.is and a passport photo must then be submitted to the District Commissioner's office.
Step 3
Driving logbook
A digital driving logbook tracks the progress of your training — driving school, driving lessons, practice driving, and exam results. You access it via My Pages on Island.is.
Step 4
First driving lesson
Book a driving lesson with your instructor and you can begin the practical part of your training. The instructor guides you from the basics.
Step 5
Driving School 1
A theoretical course covering understanding of traffic, traffic rules, traffic signs, traffic psychology, and exam preparation. Some driving schools offer instruction in other languages.
Step 6
Driving lessons — prerequisite for practice driving
At least 10 driving lessons are required before a student is ready for practice driving. Your instructor determines when you are ready.
Step 7
Practice driving
To drive with someone other than a driving instructor, your supervisor must apply for a practice driving permit. The practice permit is issued for up to 18 months.
Step 8
Driving School 2
A second theoretical course where you choose a driving school and complete the course. Builds on what you learned in Driving School 1.
Step 9
Driving School 3 / Skid Track
A theoretical and practical course. The practical part takes place on a skid track where you learn to assess hazardous driving conditions — ice, loose gravel, the effects of alcohol and fatigue on driving.
Step 10
Written exam
The exam consists of 50 true/false statements. You must answer 45 correctly to pass. Results come immediately and if you fail you can retake the exam after one week.
Step 11
Driving lessons — prerequisite for practical exam
Expect 17–25 driving lessons in total. The minimum number of lessons is 15. Your instructor prepares you for the practical exam.
Step 12
Practical exam
The exam is divided into an oral section (about lights, controls and safety equipment) and a driving test on designated routes. If the total score falls below 80, the candidate has not passed.
Step 13
Provisional license
After passing both the written and practical exams, the District Commissioner issues a provisional license. It is valid for 1–3 years.
Step 14
Driving assessment
Before you can apply for a full license, you need to undergo a driving assessment. It involves a 30-minute drive with an instructor, self-assessment, and feedback. You cannot fail a driving assessment.
Step 15
Full license
When you have driven on a provisional license for one year without points for a traffic offence and completed the driving assessment, you can apply for a full license.
